Maroons Win Five Events on Family Weekend

Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Field Hockey, Cross Country All Victorious

SALEM, VA— Roanoke College athletics won four of five events on Saturday as the school hosted its annual Family Day Weekend. Roanoke’s men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, and cross country teams were all victorious on the day. The cross country team actually saw both the men’s and women’s sides win the sixth annual Maroon Invitational. Results from the day are below, with game summaries following.

Men’s Soccer 4, Hampden-Sydney 3

Ryan Pflugrad (Columbia, MD/Hammond) scored with 16:16 left on the game clock as the Maroons defeated Hampden-Sydney in a seesaw battle. The Maroons improve to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Tigers drop to 6-5, 2-2 with Saturday’s loss.

The Maroons took a 1-0 lead just one minute into the contest thanks to a goal from Regi Francois (Springfield, VA/Washington International). The Tigers matched that goal just under five minutes later. The second half saw a flurry of goals started off by the Maroons at the 58:45 mark on a David Lechtrecker (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) tally. Hampden-Sydney tied the score at two on a goal from Landon Moore (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) and then went up by one just 2:12 later. Rob Comegys (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) scored the HSC go-ahead goal, his second of the day.

The Maroons, however, responded just 24 seconds later on a penalty kick by Todd Smith (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven). RC’s Bryan Vann (Westhampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) was pulled down in the box to give RC the shot. The game remained tied until the 16:16 mark when Francois back-heeled a pass to Pflugrad who then beat the HSC keeper.

Field Hockey 2, Randolph-Macon

The Maroons improved to 7-3 on the season and 5-2 in the ODAC with a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon. The Maroons have now won two straight over the Yellow Jackets. RMC falls to 4-6 on the year and 3-3 in the ODAC.

Sarah Tengwall (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s) and Nicole Yodice (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional) were Roanoke’s goal scorers on the day. Both goals came directly off of penalty corners, Tengwall’s in the first half, Yodice’s in the second. Tengwall deflected in a shot by Mary Joyner (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte).

Roanoke outshot RMC 16-9 on the day. RC keeper Jodi Godbout (Davie, FL/Centennial {MD}) made five saves, while RMC keepers combined to stop 12.

Women’s Soccer 3, LaRoche (PA) College

The Maroons got a game-winning goal from CiCi Castle (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) with just five seconds left in the first half to improve to 7-2 on the season with a 3-0 win over LaRoche College. Roanoke has now won six straight games. The Maroons need two more win in a row to tie the school record of eight which was set during the 1986 season.

Laura Hunter (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) and Shelley Olds (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) scored second half goals for the Maroons. Roanoke outshot the Redhawks, 14-3 on the day. The goaltending tandem of Kate Enright (Dover, DE/Dover) and Christine Torzewski (Iselin, NJ/JFK Memorial) made one save for the Maroons on the day.

RC travels across town on Sunday for a 1:00 pm contest against Hollins.

Volleyball 0, Randolph-Macon 3

The Maroons were swept by the Yellow Jackets in volleyball action by the scores of 15-7, 15-13, and 16-14. The Maroons fall to 8-4 on the season and 3-1 in ODAC play, while RMC is now 5-7, 3-1. The loss denied the Maroons their first ever 4-0 start to the conference schedule and is just their second loss in the past eight matches.

Melissa Slusher (Altavista, VA/Altavista) had 15 kills on the day for the Maroons, while Holly Holland (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) tallied 15 assists and 13 digs. The Maroons also got solid defensive play from Julia Freeman (Kansas City, MO/Parkhill) who had 10 digs. Kelly Valoris (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) backed-up Holland with 10 assists. The Maroons are at Chowan on Tuesday evening.

CASEY SMITH SET NEW COURSE RECORD AS MAROONS WIN BOTH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S RACES

Senior standout cross country runner Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) ran a Elizabeth Campus course record 17:51 to win the women’s portion of the sixth annual Maroon Invitational hosted by Roanoke. Smith’s time crushed the old standard by exactly one minutes. She led the RC women to a first place finish, while a host of RC men led the men’s side also to victory. Smith ran away with her fourth consecutive Maroon Invitational title, beating the second place finisher by 1:45. Washington & Lee’s Burke Duncan was the second place finisher, while her teammate Jessica Parrillo was third. The Maroons, however, captured the women’s title with 40 points, compared to W&L’s 48. Roanoke’s Alli McVey (Bowdoinham, ME/Mt. Ararat) placed fourth overall with a time of 20:23. Jenny Kincaid (Mt. Sidney, VA/Fort Defiance) was RC’s third place finisher (sixth overall) with a 20:39.

The Roanoke College men dominated their race, accumulating 22 points. W&L was second with 53 points. Bridgewater’s Ross Bair was the men’s individual champion, breaking the tape in 27:04, the best mark in the ODAC thus far this season. Roanoke had sixth of the next seven places. Freshman Rob Welch (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) was second in the race with a 27:49. Jason Belt (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day) was third, while Blake Dalton (Gretna, VA/Altavista) overtook a W&L runner in the final 50 yards to place fourth. Laurence Loesel, Stephen Wheatley, and Will Stuart gave the Maroons six runners in the top 10 as they finished sixth, seventh, and eighth.
