Layman Named First Team All-American
Morris Gets Second Team Nod
EAU CLAIRE, WI--Roanoke College senior softball standout Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) was named to the National FastPitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III First Team All-American team, while teammate Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington) was a Second Team selection as a catcher. Layman becomes Roanoke softball’s first ever First Team All-American, while Morris earns her second consecutive national award. Layman finished the season with a 22-6 pitching record and a .357 batting average for the Maroons who completed the season with a 42-11 overall record and finished tied for fifth in the country. In addition to her All-American award, Layman also earned All-Tournament honors at the Division III national championships in Eau Claire, WI last week. Layman set a school record with 117 strikeouts this season and ended the year with a 0.98 earned run average. Batters hit just .194 against the three-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year during the 2001 season.
Morris was named to the Second Team NFCA All-American team for the second straight season after leading the Maroons at the plate in 2001. The senior hit a team-best .453 and finished second on the team with 40 runs batted in. Her 78 hits were 17 more than the next closer player on the team, while her 18 stolen bases trailed just one teammate. Morris’ 18 bases on balls also paced all Maroon players.
