Senior All-American Advances to National Ballot

WINGATE, NC--Roanoke College senior Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Salem) has been selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District III softball team, earning a spot on the First Team. This is the third time in her career that Layman has been named to the team, and the second time she has gained First Team honors, the other coming in 1999.

Layman is a Spanish major and holds down a 3.86 grade point average in Roanoke’s Honors Program. In addition, she was the nation’s top scholarship recipient for the Sigma Delta Pi study abroad program. Sigma Delta Pi is the Spanish national honor society. With her selection to the All-District team, Layman advances to the national ballot where she will seek to become the first Maroon to ever receive Academic All-American honors.

Layman and the Maroons head into Friday’s NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional with a 38-8 overall record. The team won its third consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship and will play Christopher Newport at 12:30pm at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
