Top Two Seeds Alive, Muhlenberg and York to Play Again
SALEM, VA—Top seeded Salisbury State, Roanoke College, Muhlenberg College, and York (PA) College all remain alive after the first day of the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional softball tournament being held at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA. The tournament continues on Saturday at 3:00pm with a game between Salisbury State and Roanoke College. Game 1 - York 3, Muhlenberg 2 (8 innings)
In their first ever NCAA Division III softball tournament game, the Spartans of York (PA) College picked up a 3-2 extra-inning victory over the Muhlenberg College Mules. The Spartans improved to 32-6 with the victory, which saw the team come back from a 2-0 deficit. Muhlenberg fell to 23-16 and 0-3 over the past two seasons in NCAA postseason play.
The Mules struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Amanda Ibey and Meghan Woods gave the Mules a 1-0 lead. Angie Tyson would later make the score 2-0 when she crossed the plate on a single by Missy Arnott. The two runs would be all the Mules were able to get in the game.
York tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning and then get the game-winning run in the eighth. In the sixth, Shannon Miller led off with a double and two batters later came home on a single by Samantha Miller. Two batters after Samantha Miller’s RBI single, she tied the score on a single by Heather Tomer.
The second batter of the eighth inning, Colleen Price walked and went to second on a fielder’s choice by the next YC batter. After another walk, Price came home on a one-base hit by junior Staci Lehn.
Game 2 - Roanoke 1, Christopher Newport 0
Roanoke’s Amy Layman outdueled Donna Cerami of Christopher Newport as the Maroons defeated the Captains, 1-0. The Maroons moved to 39-8 on the season and Layman became the first pitcher in team history to win 20 games in a season. Christopher Newport fell to 35-8 on the year.
Layman pitched all seven innings for the Maroons, allowing no runs while sending seven CNU batters out on strikes. She also helped her cause at the plate, driving in the winning run in the fourth inning. Lisa Wasiloff led the inning off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Crystal Hileman. After Crystal Berry singled, moving Wasiloff over one base, Layman then hit a shot to third base that was too much for the CNU fielder to handle. Wasiloff was able to score on the single, the only run of the contest.
Cermani had a solid outing for the Captains, going six innings and allowing just the one earned run.
Game 3 - Salisbury State 14, York 3 (5 innings)
Salisbury State scored six runs in both the second and third innings, and cruised to a 14-3 five-inning win over York (PA) College in the third game of the Atlantic Regional. The Sea Gulls improve to 35-7 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 32-7 on the 2001 campaign. Salisbury State and Roanoke will play at 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon for the right to advance to the regional title game.
The Sea Gulls opened the game in the first inning with one run, but then exploded to get 12 over the next two innings. Salisbury State had 10 hits in the second and third innings, and batted around in both. Erin Gross had big shots in both innings for the regional’s top ranked team, getting two-run doubles in both frames. Gross finished the game with two hits and four RBIs.
Salisbury’s Terri Amalfitano had an outstanding game for the Sea Gulls, going 2-for-2 at the plate and also picking up her 23rd pitching victory of the season. The senior threw 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out two batters. In addition to Gross’ four RBIs, three other Sea Gulls drove in two runners. Twelve of the 13 SSU players that got an at-bat in the game posted a hit, while as a team, the squad pounded out 15 safeties.
Jen Kuran had two of the five York hits in the contest. She drove in a run for the Spartans in the top of the fifth inning on a single.
Game 4 - Muhlenberg 6, Christopher Newport 2
Trailing 1-0, Muhlenberg scored six times in the top of the seventh inning and eliminated Christopher Newport 6-2 in the tournament’s fourth game. The Mules improved to 24-16 on the year, while the Captains’ season came to a close with a 35-9 overall mark. The Mules will next play York College at 5:30 on Saturday evening. York won Friday’s contest, 3-2, in eight.
The Mules scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the final inning to get their first tournament win over the past two seasons. The team had been on an 0-3 run. With the bases loaded and one out, pinch-hitter Kelly Berg singled to bring in Kate Dischino and tie the score at one. The next batter, Becki Toth doubled, which allowed Lori Blanchfield and Berg to score, Berg’s the winning tally. The Mules would add three more runs in the inning and held off a late CNU comeback attempt to get the victory.
The Captains got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on two doubles. Renee Sigafoos led off the frame with a double and two batters later scored on a two-base hit by pitcher Vanessa Gray.
Toth and Kostelnik each drove in two runs for Muhlenberg, which got the win riding the arm of Danielle DeLucia who allowed just on earned run in seven innings, while striking out two and yielding just five hits.
