Maroons Take Third at RC/BC Classic
Roanoke Defeats Bridgewater Twice on Sunday
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College softball team took third place, in an eight-team tournament, at the Roanoke/Bridgewater Fast Pitch Classic with a 6-2 win over the Bridgewater College Eagles. The win improves Roanoke’s record to 16-6 on the season and was the second time on the day, and third time this season (against no losses), Roanoke defeated Bridgewater. The Maroons jumped on Bridgewater early, scoring five runs in the first inning. After Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington) had driven in Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) and Kari Whitney (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) had plated Sonya Hylton (Floyd, VA/Floyd), both Morris and Whitney were brought in on a single from Liz Croy (Salem, VA/Salem). Croy’s two-run single came with two outs.
Suzanne Maddox (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) pitched the final three innings for the Maroons, striking out six batters in the process. Maddox was also 3-for-3 from the plate in the game, and drove in Roanoke’s sixth run of the game, in the fifth inning.
Earlier in the day, Roanoke had beaten Bridgewater by the count of 5-1. The Maroons had a big second inning in that contest, scoring three runs. Croy had her first two-run single of the day in the inning. The Maroons averted disaster in the fourth, when BC had the bases loaded, had already brought home a run, and had just one out. However, Layman got an Eagle batter to ground back to the pitchers circle where she started a 1-2-3 double-play.
After defeating Bridgewater, the Maroons fell to Savannah College of Art & Design, 11-9, a loss that dropped them into the third place game. The Maroons staked Savannah to a 6-1 second-inning lead, but was able to fight back throughout the game. The Savannah batters proved to be a little to strong in the end, coming away with the win.
Rowan University won the tournament’s championship with a 13-0 five-inning win of the University of Charleston. The Profs finished the two-day tournament with just one loss, a 5-1 decision to Roanoke on Saturday.
