SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College softball team swept a double-header from the Bridgewater College Eagles on Tuesday afternoon, winning by the scores of 7-1 and 4-0. With the two victories Roanoke improves to 26-6 on the season and 10-0 in conference play. The 26 wins Roanoke has amassed this season are a new school record, breaking the old standard of 25 that the team won just last season. The Tuesday sweep gives Roanoke a perfect 5-0 record against Bridgewater this season, and an 11-0 mark against the Eagles over the past two seasons.
Game 1
Suzanne Maddox (Amherst, VA/Amherst) picked up her 10th win of the season in the first game, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run in seven innings. She also helped herself at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The Maroons also got two runs batted in from Marcie Poff (Vinton, VA/William Byrd), who was 2-for-2 in the contest.
Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) also had two hits for Roanoke, including a double, while Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington) was 2-for-2 with two walks.
The Maroons struck for three runs in the third inning and then added three more in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Bridgewater’s only run off of Maddox came in the third inning.
Game 2
The Maroons rode the pitching of Layman in the second game to grab the 4-0 win. Layman, in picking up her 15th win of the season, a number that adds to her school record, allowed just two hits and no runs.
The Maroons took advantage of three Bridgewater errors in the game. Roanoke led just 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but plated three runs in the inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Poff and Morris both finished the game with two more hits, while Alexis Riseman (Gorham, ME/Gorham) went 2-for-4.
Today’s sweep of the Eagles sets up an important home double-header with the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin this Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Marlin are the defending conference champions, and trail Roanoke in this year’s league standings by just one game. The Maroons will travel to Ferrum College on Wednesday, for a contest with the Panthers that was re-scheduled from this past Sunday, before coming back to the Moyer Sports Complex on Saturday.
