Maroons Go 2-1 on First Day of RC/BC Classic
Roanoke Beats Chowan and Rowan Before Falling to Charleston
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College softball team went 2-1 on Saturday in the Roanoke/Bridgewater Fast Pitch Classsic. The Maroons are now 14-5 and return to action tomorrow in the second day of the tournament. The team defeated Chowan College, 9-1, in the first game, and then defeated Rowan University, 5-1, before falling to the University of Charleston, 8-4. In the opening game with Chowan, the Maroons used the homerun ball to get the win. Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington) hit a solo shot in the third inning, while Crystal Hileman (St. Paul, VA/St. Paul) and Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) each connected in the bottom of the fifth inning. Layman was 3-for-4 in the game, while Morris finished the contest with three runs scored.
The Maroons then squared off with the Rowan University Profs. Layman earned the win in the circle for the Maroons, pitching a three-hitter and not allowing an earned run. Marcie Poff (Vinton, VA/William Byrd) was 3-for-4 in the game and scored twice. The victory over Rowan extended the Maroons' winning streak to 12 games.
That streak was snapped in the final game of the day, as Roanoke came out on the short end of an 8-4 score with the University of Charleston (WV). The Maroons trailed, 4-3, going into the bottom of the sixth, but tied the score in the inning. However, Charleston, which is a Division II school, touched the plate four times in their half of the seventh to earn the win. Poff was again 3-of-4 at the plate, while also scoring three runs and driving in a baserunner. Morris, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Player of the Week, was 2-for-3 in the game before leaving with an injury.
Roanoke returns to action on Sunday at 9:00 am, as they take on the Bridgewater College Eagles in the second day of the tournament. They will also play Savannah College of Art & Design at 12:30 pm on Sunday.
