Maroons Sweep Denison, 9-0, 4-0

Morris and Whitney Drive in Four Each in Double-Header

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College softball team, currently ranked 18th in the nation, improved to 13-1 on the season with a sweep of Denison (OH) University on Saturday afternoon at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA. These were the first home games the Maroons have played this season after going 11-1 in a trip to North and South Carolina last week. Denison falls to 0-2 with the two losses on Saturday.

Game 1 - Roanoke 9, Denison 0 (5 innings)

The Maroons used a six-run third inning to pull out the 9-0 run in five innings. Kari Whitney (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) and Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington) each had two hits in the contest. Whitney batted in three runs in the game, two coming on a homerun in the fourth inning, while Morris knocked in two.

The Maroons took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning and then put up a six-spot in the third. Five of Roanoke’s six runs in the inning came before there was an out. With two runs already in and runners on second and third, freshman Rachel Capozzi (Revere, MA/Winchester) ripped a double, driving in two runs and giving the Maroons a 5-0 lead. Three of Roanoke’s runs in the inning were unearned after the Big Red committed two errors. In all, Denison had four errors in the game and seven in the double-header.

Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) picked up the win for the Maroons, going all five innings and allowing just three hits. Layman, the two-time defending ODAC Player of the Year, struckout three in the game and walked one.

Game 2 - Roanoke 4, Denison 0

Holly Morris drove in two more runs and the Maroons scored two more unearned runs to register the sweep of Denison with a 4-0 win in the second contest.

As they did in the first game, the Maroons got all the runs they would need in the first inning when Morris slapped a single that scored Layman who had led off the inning with a walk. Morris would add her second RBI of the game, and fourth of the afteernoon, in the third, when she again drove in Layman who was standing at third. Later in the inning, Kari Whitney brought home Sonya Hylton (Floyd, VA/Floyd) on a fielders choice, marking Whitney’s fourth RBI of the day.

Roanoke sophomore Meghan Cookston (Roanoke, VA/Salem) got the win for the Maroons, going six innings, allowing juts three hits and fanning five DU batters.

The Maroons are off until Thursday, when they host Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference double-header. The set is scheduled to get under way at 5:00 pm at thee Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA.
