Maroons Take Two From Emory & Henry

Layman Picks Up Two Wins

SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College softball team swept a pair of games from the Emory & Henry Wasps on Tuesday night to improve to 18-6 on the season, and a perfect 4-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference contests. Roanoke was victorious, 6-0, in the first game, and then followed with a thrilling 8-7 win in eight innings in the second contest. With the two losses, Emory & Henry falls to 6-16 on the season and 2-4 in ODAC play.

Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) picked up the shutout in the first game, pitching seven innings and allowing seven hits. She also struck out six batters in the game. Marcie Poff (Vinton, VA/William Byrd) was 1-for-2 in the game with a two-run homerun, her first of the season. Suzanne Maddox (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) also had two RBIs in the game, driving in both with a double. She finished the game with two hits in three at-bats.

The nightcap was going much the same way, with Roanoke holding onto a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning. The Maroons defense turned on them in the inning, as they committed four errors to allow six Emory & Henry runs to score. The Wasps added another in the top of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. Maddox ripped a double in the bottom half of the inning and was driven home to tie the score at seven and send the game into extra innings. In the extra frame, with Layman on second, Sonya Hylton (Floyd, VA/Floyd County) laid down a bunt that the Wasp catcher proceeded to throw over the firstbaseman’s head, an error that allowed Layman to score, giving RC its 18th win of the year.

Kari Whitney (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) had three hits in the game, including a two-run homer in the Maroons’ three-run first inning. The round tripper was her fourth of the season. Whitney had three RBIs in the game. Layman, Hylton, and Liz Croy (Salem, VA/Salem) all finished the game with two hits. Layman pitched the final two innings for Roanoke to pickup her second win of the night. She is now 11-2 on the year.

The Maroons return to action on Monday, as they travel to Eastern Mennonite to play the Royals in a game that was rescheduled due to snow earlier in the month. The next Roanoke home game will be next Saturday, April 10th, as the Maroons play host to Southern Virginia at the Moyer Sports Complex.
