Maroons Win Two at Tournament

Rain Halts Play on Saturday

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College softball team’s East Coast FastPitch Classic was brought to an early end on Saturday when the rains hit Salem. The Maroons were able to squeeze in two victories at the tournament which has a field of 16 teams from up and down the East Coast. Roanoke defeated Mary Washington, 12-1, and then beat NC Wesleyan, 3-2, in eight innings.

In the victory over Mary Washington, Kari Whitney belted a three-run homerun to center field, as the Maroons cruised to the 12-1 win. Whitney finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate, while Liz Croy went 3-for-3. Suzanne Maddox got the win in the circle for the Maroons.

In the second game RC played, the Maroons scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning after drawing even with NC Wesleyan in the bottom of the seventh. Holly Morris hit a single to left bringing in Amy Layman from third base to win the game. After allowing two runs in the first inning, Layman allowed just one more hit to the Bishops the rest of the way. Marcie Poff drilled a homerun in the win, which was RC’s 21st of the season, against just two losses.
