Maroons Sweep Lynchburg College
RC Now 29-2 After 2-1 and 8-2 Wins

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College softball team improved to 29-2 on the season with a pair of wins over Lynchburg College on Tuesday evening. The Maroons, ranked ninth in the country in the latest Division III polls, also improve to 6-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. Lynchburg falls to 13-16, 5-5 in league action. The Maroons won game one, 2-1 in nine innings, and followed with an 8-2 victory in the second game. Game 1 - Roanoke 2, Lynchburg 1 (9)
Marcie Poff drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to give the Maroons the victory. Poff’s safety drove in freshman Rachel Capozzi who was put on second to start off the inning as dictated by international tie-breaking rules.
The game went into extra-innings in a scoreless tie, but both teams scored a run in the eighth inning, setting up Poff’s game-winning hit. The Hornets scored their run in the eighth when Lindsay King singled to bring in Dana Mann from third base. The Maroons responded in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Suzanne Maddox.
Amy Layman went the distance for the Maroons, giving up just the one earned run. She struck out five batters, allowed just five hits and walked just one. Carla McAlister was Lynchburg’s pitcher of record, yielding two runs on seven hits.
Game 2 - Roanoke 8, Lynchburg 2
The Maroons scored two runs in the first second, fourth, and sixth innings to record their sixth consecutive win over the Hornets. After driving in the winning run in the first game, Suzanne Maddox earned the win for the Maroons in the circle. Maddox gave up nine hits and runs in the first and third innings.
Crystal Hileman drove in the winning runs, knocking a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning. The Maroons had taken an early 2-1 lead after Holly Morris and Kari Whitney each doubled in the first inning to drive in baserunners. Those hits came after Heather Childress had given LC a 1-0 lead with an RBI triple in the top of the inning. Childress drove in Lindsay King, who had a one-out single.
Morris finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate with two doubles and two runs batted in. Michelle Edelen picked up the loss for the Hornets, going all seven innings. Lynchburg’s Trina Liggon went 2-for-4 from the plate in thee game with a stolen base, a run scored, and one RBI.
