Maroons Lock Up First Place With thee Two Wins

SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College softball team swept the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Sunday afternoon, 13-3 and 8-2, and in the process secured the number-one seed in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament, to be held next weekend (April 24-25) in Salem. The Maroons are now 31-7 on the year and finish the regular-season with a 13-1 conference record. The 13 league wins tie the league-record, while the team’s 31 overall wins are the most any member of the league has ever won.

Game 1

The Maroons jumped out of the gate early in the first game, scoring seven times in the first two innings. The team also added six in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the lead to 13-3. Meghan Cookston (Roanoke, VA/Salem) picked up her second win of the season, throwing five innings of six-hit ball. She allowed three earned runs and struck out two batters.

At the plate, Crystal Hileman (St. Paul, VA/St. Paul) had a big day for the Maroons. She went just 1-for-3, but her lone hit was her eighth homerun of the season. The shot was also her second grandslam in as many weeks. She finished the day with four runs batted in, while also scoring twice herself. The trio of Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar), Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington), and Kari Whitney (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) had nine hits on the day, drove in four baserunners, and scored six runs.

The Maroons, who stole six bases in the game (three coming from Layman), also got two hits and two RBIs from Kelly Gouldthorpe (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst County), and two runs batted in from Liz Croy (Salem, VA/Salem).

Game 2

The Maroons improved to 31-7 on the year with an 8-2 victory in the second contest of the day. Erin Sullivan (Middleboro, MA/Middleboro) got the win for Roanoke, going the distance and allowing just one earned run. She scattered six hits and fanned two Yellow Jackets.

The big blow in this win came in the first inning off of the bat of Holly Morris. After Layman and Sonya Hylton (Floyd, VA/Floyd) both reached base safely, Morris sent her seventh homerun of the season over the fence. The three-run shot was part of Roanoke’s five-run inning.

The Maroons also got a stellar plate performance from Leigh Carter (Roanoke, VA/Northside) in the contest. Carter went 3-for-3 in the game, drove in two and scored twice. Layman again pounded out three hits. She finished the double-header with six hits (6-for-7), two doubles, three stolen bases, three runs scored, and a run driven in.

With the two wins on Sunday, Roanoke secured the ODAC’s regular-season championship and a number-one seed in the conference’s upcoming tournament. The Maroons will square off with the Lynchburg College Hornets, who RC swept in a double-dip earlier in the year, at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon (April 24th).
