The Maroons got the first of its two solid pitching performances of the day in the first game. Suzanne Maddox (Amherst, VA/Amherst) went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out three.
Roanoke scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, a run that would hold up to be the game-winner. After Amy Layman (Salem, VA/Glenvar) led-off with a walk, Sonya Hylton (Floyd, VA/Floyd) grounded out to the pitcher on the play, but Layman advanced to third. The next batter, Holly Morris (Barrington, RI/Barrington) then grounded out to the secondbaseman, allowing Layman to come home. Layman cored the second run of the game, in the third inning, again off of a Morris hit. Marcie Poff (Vinton, VA/William Byrd) doubled in Hylton in the fifth inning for the third RC run which proved to be more than enough.
GAME 2 - Roanoke 2, Southern Virginia 0
The Maroons took game two, 2-0, behind a one-hit shutout from Amy Layman. While allowing just the one hit, Layman struck out seven batters. She had six 1-2-3 innings, and allowed more than three Southern Virginia batters to the plate in just the third inning, all while not allowing a baserunner past second.
The Maroons got the only run it would need in the third inning. With two outs, Sonya Hylton reached first when her infield pop-up fell to the ground after a Southern Virginia miscommunication. Holly Morris then stepped to the plate a hit a line drive to left that the outfielder could not catch. The ball trickle to the fence and Morris ended up with a triple that brought home Hylton. The Maroons added an ‘insurance’ run in the fifth inning, a run that came off the bat of Crystal Hileman (St. Paul, VA/St. Paul). Hileman hit he fourth homerun of the week, and sixth of the season.
