Smith Runs NCAA Provisional Time in 5,000

Hollett Sets Bridgewater Invitational Record

BRIDGEWATER/FREDERICKSBURG, VA--Roanoke College junior Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) ran an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 17:46.5 in the 5,000 meters at the Battleground Relays in Fredericksburg, VA. Smith won the race and was just 11 seconds off of an automatic qualifying time. Also at the meet, Laurence Loesel (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) placed fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:28, beating 16 other runners in the competition.

Meanwhile, at the Bridgewater College Invitational, the rest of Roanoke’s team had a strong showing. Emily Hollett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) set a meet and stadium record with a jump of 36’ 7” in the triple jump. She broke her own mark of 36’ 6.75” which she set at the Invitational two years ago. Hollett was also first in the high jump (5’) and second in the long jump (17’ 8.75”). The Maroons also placed third, fourth, and fifth in the long jump. Shelli Stevens (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) was third in the event with a leap of 16’ .75” She was also second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:10.03).

Abby Williams (Somers, CT/Somers) won the women’s javelin for the Maroons, throwing a distance of 107’ 2”. Bekah Driver’s toss of 32’ 11.5” in the shot put was good enough for second place, while Sarah Vaughan was third in the event.

On the men’s side, Adam Cassis (Charleston, WV/Capital) had a throw of 151’ 11.5” in the javelin which was the second place effort. He also had a strong showing in the shot put and the discus.

Jason Belt (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day) had a fourth place run in both the 5,000 meters (17:06.81) and the 1,500 meters (4:25.81), while Jeremy Burcher (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was third in the 800 meters with a timee of 2:03.33).
