Smith Runs AQ in 5,000 Meters at ETSU

Senior Finishes Second With Time of 17:16

JOHNSON CITY, TN--In a 5,000 meter race that featured 42 runners, four of which were Division III athletes, Roanoke College senior Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) finished second with a time of 17:16 at the East Tennessee State University Invitational on Saturday in Johnson City, TN. The time automatically qualifies Smith for the Division III indoor track & field national championships which will be held at Oshkosh, WI on March 9-10. She also set a school record with the run.

The race’s winner was an unattached runner that used to star at Clemson University. Smith passed through the mile in 5:33, and then broke the two-mile mark in 11:03. Also on Saturday, Laurence Loesel (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) placed 30th in the men’s 3,000 meters with a time of 9:13. His mark was more than 20 seconds better than his previous personal best.
