Smith Finishes Second in 5,000 at Nationals
Senior Sets a School Record With Time of 17:06.99
OSHKOSH, WI--Roanoke College senior track & field star Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) finished second in the 5,000 meter race at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field national championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Smith, who entered the race with the third best time in the country this season, ran a 17:06.99 and in the process set a new Roanoke College record. She was just over seven seconds off the championship time of 16:59.07 which was run by Maggie Hanson of Hamilton College.Saturday’s finish is Smith’s third top 10 finish in an NCAA track & field championship race in the past year. At last year’s outdoor championships, Smith was second in the 10,000 meter race and seventh in the 5,000 meter event. She has also placed 21st and 27th at the 1999 and 2000 national cross country championships in each of the past two seasons. Saturday’s race was comprised of 14 different runners from across the nation. Smith’s second place finish was just about four seconds better than the time of the 2000 national cross country champion, Johanna Olson of Luther College.
