Roanoke Women Win Maroon Invitational
Cook and Smith Get Two Wins, Dalton and Belt Get Men's Wins
SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s outdoor track & field team won its own invitational on Saturday afternoon, compiling 151 points to win the Maroon Invitational. Individually, the Roanoke women won five championships on the day, while the Roanoke men, who were sixth at the meet, had individual championships in two events.On the RC women’s side, Jenny Cook (Broadway, VA/Timberville) won the championships in both the triple jump and the shot put. Cook had a triple jump distance of 34’11.25”, just a quarter of an inch longer than teammate Christie Lieber (Salem, VA/Salem) who was second. Coming in third in the event was Roanoke native Emily Hollett (Roanoke, VA/Northside). Hollett bested an athlete from Washington & Lee in the discus with throw of 83’ 8” to take the top spot. In the shot put, Cook was over two feet longer than the second place competitor. Also on the women’s side, senior Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) set a meet record in the 3,000 meters, running the race in 10:08.80 and in doing so earning an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. Smith also set a school record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:46.50. For the Roanoke men, Blake Dalton (Gretna, VA/Altavista) was the pace setter in the 1,500 meters, claiming the medal with a time of 4:10.10, just .60 seconds faster than a runner from Christopher Newport University. Jason Belt (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster) was the champion in the 3,000 meters, crossing the tape in 9:10.70. The Maroons head to Bridgewater, VA next Saturday for the Bridgewater College Invitational.
