Four School Records Fall at Championships
Roanoke Women Take Second Place at the Conference Meet

ASHLAND, Va.--A second place finish and several school records falling were the highlights of the Roanoke College track & Field team’s participation in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships on Saturday. While the women took second place, the men grabbed a fourth place finish. This is the second year in a row that the women have been the runners-up at the conference meet. On the women’s side, Sindy Wilson (Suitland, MD/St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes) won the 200 meter dash and in the process set a new school record. Wilson finished the race in 26.26 seconds. She also took second in the 100 meter dash, crossing the line in 12.99 seconds, her best time of the season. Sophomore Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee), already the school’s record holder in the 5,000 meters, broke two more school marks today. Her time of 4:55.65 in the 1,500 meters and 10:39.01 in the 3,000 meters establish new school standards. She took a second place in the 1,500 and second in the 3,000.
The team of Wilson, Stevens, Steph Dannemann (New Concord, OH/New Concord), and Liz Sullivan (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) ran the 4x400 meter relay in 4:14.39, setting a new school record, the fourth to fall on the day.
Shelli Stevens (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) won the women’s 400 meter hurdles (1:07.74) and was second in the 100 meter hurdles (16.29). Emily Hollett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) had two first place performances on the day, taking both the long (17’ 3 1/2”) and the triple (36’ 1/4”) jumps.
On the men’s side, David Angell (Boones Mill, VA/Franklin County) finished ahead of every other athlete in the 5,000 meters, breaking the tape in 16:01.23. The Maroons also got a second place from Blake Dalton (Gretna, VA/Altavista) in the 1,500 meters (4:08.99) and a second from Jim Lerda (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata) in the 100 meter dash. Lerda ran a personal best 11.10 seconds.
