Junior Wins Two Hurdle Races, Dalton Places Second in 1,500

LEXINGTON, VA--Roanoke College junior Steph Dannemann (New Concord, OH/John Glenn) was named the Athlete of the Meet at the Washington & Lee outdoor track & field meet on Saturday in Lexington, VA. Dannemann won the 100 and 400 meter high hurdle events, helping the Maroon women to a third place finish at the eight-team meet. The Roanoke men, powered by a second place finish from Blake Dalton (Gretna, VA/Altavista) in the 1,500 meters, placed sixth at the meet.

Dannemann picked up the win in the 100 meter hurdle race with a time of 17.34, almost a full second ahead of her closest opponent. She then placed first in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 1:15.67, just under three seconds faster than the second place finisher. To cap off her day, Dannemann recorded a 92’ 6” throw in the javelin, good enough for a fifth place finish.

Jenny Cook (Broadway, VA/Broadway) placed first in the women’s triple jump, posting a leap of 32’ 11.5”, which was two inches further than the second place medalist. Cook also took home a second in the long jump (15’ 8”), and third in the 200 meters (28.65). Also for the Roanoke women, Sarah Vaughan (Blue Ridge, VA/Staunton River) was fourth in the shot put (30’ 1.25”) and fifth in the discus (86’ 11”).

For the Roanoke College men, Dalton was second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:07.12. In the men’s 800 meter run, Justin Wilkinson (Blue Ridge, VA) was the third place finisher with a time of 2:00.69. Roanoke’s Laurence Loesel (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) finished behind four other runners in the 5,000 meter race, crossing the line in 16:27.40.

This was Roanoke’s first outdoor meet of the season. The Maroons will next be in action next Saturday as they host the Maroon Invitational on Alumni Field in Salem, VA. The meet gets under way at 9:30.
