Maroons Compete at the Conference Championships

Roanoke Sends Several School Records Falling

LEXINGTON, Va.--The Roanoke College men’s and women’s track teams competed at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference indoor track & field championships today and their day was highlighted by several record breaking performances. Overall, the men’s team placed fourth, while the women took home a third place finish.

Emily Hollett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) set a school-record in the long jump, finishing with a distance of 17’ 5 1/4”, a performance that was good enough to take home first place. Hollett, who has been sidelined for the past couple of weeks with an ankle injury, also grabbed second place in the high jump, jumping a height of 5’ 2". Hollett wasn’t done yet, as she finished atop the triple jump column, leaping to a distance of 35’ 11 1/4", missing a national provisional qualifier by just two inches.

Long distance runner Casey Smith (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) sent two school-standards falling on the day, a 5:05.33 run in the 1,500 meters, and a 10;53.92 time in the 3,000 meters. Her time in the 3,000 was the top time in the meet, while her run in the 1,500 event trailed just one other runner entered in the race.

Sindy Wilson (Suitland, MD/St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes) had a solid day in the speed races, finishing third in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.69 and second in the 200 meter dash, finishng with a mark of 27.40 seconds. Also on the womnen’s side, Shelli Stevens (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) had second place finish in the 55 meter high hurdles (9.08), while Jenny Cook (Broadway, VA/Broadway) had her best jump of the year in the triple jump (35’ 1/4").

For the men, Jim Lerda (LaPlata, MD/LaPlata) set a new school-record in the 200 meter dash, crossing the tape in 23.71 seconds, breaking the old mark of 23.76 that he had established earlier this season. Ryan Nunley (Charlotte, NC/Providence Day) placed second in the 55 meter high hurdles with a time of 8.17, while Will Stuart (Independence, VA/Grayson County) placed second in the 3,000, breaking the line in 9:41.67.

Blake Dalton (Gretna, VA/Altavista) and Laurence Loesel (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) each recorded their best times in the 1,500 meters, Dalton coming in at 4:15.46 and Loesel in 4:16.56.
