Maroons Cruise Past Guilford, 3-0
Zigler Has 17 Kills, India Long Gets 17 Assists
SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College volleyball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 3-0 win over the Guilford College Quakers on Tuesday evening in Salem, VA. In addition to their 4-2 overall record, the Maroons improve to 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Guilford College falls to 1-7 on the season and 0-1 in league action. The Maroons took the win in three games by the scores of 15-9, 15-8, 15-13. After winning the first two games, the Maroons held a 10-5 lead in the second, but let the Quakers fight back to tie the score at 11. The Quakers could only get one more point the rest of the way, while the Maroons closed out the contest to take their third consecutive win over GC.
Molly Zigler (Timberville, VA/Broadway) led the Maroons to the victory, posting 17 kills in the three-game win. In addition to her strong offensive match, Zigler also had nine digs, three service aces, and a blocking assist that ended the contest.
Melissa Slusher (Altavista, VA/Altavista) had her second consecutive solid outing, recording 11 kills, five digs, and three aces. The duo of Holly Holland (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) and India Long (Woodstock, VA/Central) combined for 32 assists, 15 coming from Holland and 17 from Long. Audra Rajsich (Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino) recorded seven kills in the contest, all coming in the third and decisive game. In all, eight RC players had kills in the win, including Sarah Grimes (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) who had six and Julia Freeman (Kansas City, MO/Parkhill) who tallied five.
The Maroons return to action this Friday as they travel across to Hollins University for a 6:00 pm start. The Maroons then return home this Saturday as they host Division II Glenville (WV) State University. Match time in the Bast Center in 2:00 pm.
