Maroons Win Sixth in Past Seven

RC Beats Shenandoah, 3-1, To Improve to 7-3

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College volleyball team won its seventh match of the season on Sunday afternoon, this a 3-1 victory over the Hornets of Shenandoah University. Games scores were 15-7, 15-10, 14-16, and 15-12. The Maroons are now 7-3 on the season and have won five of their past six matches, the lone loss coming to a Division II team.

After winning the first two games of the match, the Maroons dropped the third game, 16-14. In the fourth and deciding game, Roanoke found itself trailing by as much as 10-3, but rallied to tie the score at 11 before winning 15-12. The Maroons were also down in the first game of the match, 5-1, before yielding just two more SU points the rest of the way.

Molly Zigler (Timberville, VA/Broadway) came on strong late in the match, recording 17 kills, all of which came in the third and fourth games. Zigler also had 10 digs on the day. Melissa Slusher (Altavista, VA/Altavista) posted 12 kills in the contest and also tied for the Maroon lead in digs with 14. Her number defensively was matched by freshman Audra Rajsich (Flagstaff, AZ/Cocnino). Sarah Grimes (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) had strong efforts in both the first and fourth games, recording four kills in each. She ended the day with nine kills overall.

The Maroons head to Randolph-Macon Woman’s College on Tuesday for a 6:30 pm start with the Wildcats. RC will then return home for a Saturday contest against Randolph-Macon. The match against the Yellow Jackets starts at 11:00 am in RC’s Bast Center.
