Webb Earns Honorable Mention All-ODAC Selection
SALEM, VA--Roanoke College women’s basketball players Carrie McConnell (Radford, VA/Pulaski County) and Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) both were named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women’s basketball Second Team All-Star squad on Wednesday night in a vote of league coaches. In addition to those two selections, junior Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) was named to the Honorable Mention squad. For the second consecutive season, McConnell earned second team honors. The senior point guard currently leads the team with 148 assists on the season, an average of 6.2 a game which is the second best number in the country. Earlier this season, McConnell became Roanoke’s all-time leader in the assist category, surpassing Kristie Workman who had 430 in her RC tenure. McConnell now has 503 during her stay in Salem. She is also averaging 7.2 points per game and had a career-high 23 points against Guilford earlier in the year.
Barrett is another player who set a Roanoke College record this season. She has 249 rebounds this season, which is an RC single-season record. Her rebounding effort surpasses Alice Apperson who had 235 during the 1988-89 campaign. In addition to leading the team in rebounding, Barrett is also the top scorer, posting 11.3 points each time out. She is shooting 55.1 percent from the field on the season and is third in steals with 33. Barrett, a sophomore who earns her first selection to any All-ODAC squad, was named the ODAC Player of the Week on November 21st.
Webb is currently second on the team in scoring, putting in 9.0 points per night. She is averaging 2.9 rebounds and has 21 steals on the season. In a win over Washington & Lee in Lexington, VA early in the year, Webb posted a career-best 21 points.
The Maroons are the second seed in the 2000 ODAC tournament which gets under way on Thursday. Roanoke will play Washington & Lee at 6:00 pm at the Salem Civic Center. RC is gunning for its 13th overall conference title under head coach Susan Dunagan.
