RC Defeats Emory & Henry, 71-43
Maroons Get 22 Steals, Six From Quesenberry in Win

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team defeated Emory & Henry on Thursday night in Salem in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game by a final score of 71-43. Tonight’s win moves Roanoke’s record to 11-4, 9-2 and drops Emory and Henry Wasps to 12-3, 9-2 in the ODAC. The Maroons, who defeated the Wasps in last season’s ODAC championship game, have now won 12 of the past 14 meetings with the opponent from Emory, VA. The Maroons grabbed the lead at 17:30 on the first half clock, on a basket by Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) and kept the lead throughout the remainder of the game. Leading by just seven (24-17) with 5:35 left in the first half, the Maroons closed out the frame on a 9-2 run, taking a 36-19 lead into the break. The Maroons connected on 50 percent (14-of-28) of their shots in the first half.
The Wasps closed to within 11 points three times early in the second, but could get no closer the rest of the way. E&H’s downfall in the game was ball control. The Wasps turned the ball over 36 times in the contest, with Roanoke forcing 22 of those on steals.
Barrett started the game off with the first seven points and ended with a team high with 16 points. Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) and Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) each added 13 points. Sarah Grimes (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) shot 50 percent (3-for-6) from three-point land adding 11 to the final score. Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) helped the Maroons get good looks at the basket with 10 assists, while Quesenberry was effective on the defensive end, posting a career-high six steals.
Kelly Smith (Duffield, VA/Rye Cove), who entered the game averaging 16.1 points a game for the Wasps, scored just four points in the first half and ended with a total of 13. Erin Connelly (Morganton, NC/Freedom) was strong in the paint for Emory & Henry, ending the game with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Wasps made just five field goals in the first half, and finished the game shooting just 34.1 percent (15-of-44).
Roanoke’s next game is at Virginia Wesleyan at 8:00 on Saturday. The last time the two teams the Maroons defeated the Marlins, 73-54, on December 2nd in Salem.
