Barrett Gets Rebounding Record in Win
Maroons Beat E&H, 60-55, Improve to 17-6, 14-5
Roanoke vs. Emory & Henry Box Score
SALEM, VA--Roanoke College sophomore Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the women’s basketball team to a 60-55 win over visiting Emory & Henry on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Maroons are now 17-6 on the season and 14-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the loss drops the Wasps to 14-8 overall and 13-5 in conference action. The Maroons have now won four of the past five meetings over the Wasps, with the lone E&H win coming earlier this season in Emory. Barrett’s 10 rebounds give her 240 this season which is a new Roanoke College single-season record. She entered tonight’s game needing just five to tie previous record-holder Alice Apperson with 235. Apperson originally set the mark during the 1988-89 season. Barrett’s double-double was also her ninth of the season and third in the past four games.
After Emory & Henry’s Jenny Gibson (King & Queen, VA/King & Queen) hit the game’s opening shot, the Maroons would score the next six points and would never trail again. The Maroons pushed the lead to as many as 10 points in the first half, before a late E&H bucket cut the lead to eight heading into the intermission. Senior point guard Carrie McConnell (Radford, VA/Pulaski County) had six assists in the first half (she finished with seven), while as a team the Maroons shot a blistering 61.5 percent from the field.
Despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor in the first half, Emory & Henry kept itself in the game on the offensive glass. The Wasps grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the first half, leading to several uncontested layups. Gibson scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, with four of her five boards in the period coming off of missed shots by teammates.
The Maroons could not push their lead to more than eight through the first 12 minutes of the second half, but at the same Emory & Henry could not cut the lead to less than five. Leading by five with 6:48 to play in the game, the Maroons went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 12 points. The run was spurred by the defense of Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) who finished the contest with three steals. The Wasps were able to close to within four points, but that came with just 30 seconds left in the contest. McConnell hit a free throw with four ticks left to ice the game for the Maroons.
In addition to Barrett’s 15 points and 10 rebounds, the Maroons got 13 points from junior Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) and 10 from Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County). Weber had eight points to go along with her three steals.
E&H’s leading scorer Kelly Smith (Duffield, VA/Rye County) was held to 10 points, on 3-of-15 shooting, but the Wasps got the 19 points from Gibson and 12 markers from Tammy Snyder (Creston, NC/Northwest Ashe). Gibson also had nine boards in the contest. Lindsay McKnight (Chuckey, TN/Greeneville) had an all-around solid outing for the Wasps, scoring six points, grabbing six rebounds, and recording a game-high four steals.
Roanoke closes out its regular season on Thursday with a home game against Hollins University. The game in the C. Homer Bast Center begins at 7:00 pm.
