Barrett Paces Maroons to 68-65 Win

Roanoke Survives Scare From EMU, Improve to 13-5, 10-4

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team survived a scare from the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University, coming away with a 68-65 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win on Monday night in Salem. The Maroons improve to 13-5 on the season, 10-4 in the ODAC, while EMU falls to 4-12, 4-9 in the conference.

The Maroons took a four point lead into halftime, but the Royals kept the game close in the second half, actually taking the lead 2:30 in. The lead changed hands several times in the second half, until a Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) jumper with 4:13 gave Roanoke the lead for good. After the Weber basket, the Royals were unable to score until there were just 26 seconds left in the game. After Kim Zook (Belleville, PA/Belleville Mennonite) brought EMU to within four (66-62) at the 26 second mark, the Maroons turned the ball over on the inbounds play. With just 16 seconds remaining, Emily Mullet (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) drained a three-point to make the score 66-65 in favor of RC. Roanoke then beat a full court press, giving Weber an uncontested layup with just nine ticks left, which made the score 68-65, as it would end.

Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed a game-best 15 rebounds for the Maroons. This was the 10th time this season, and second time in two games that Barrett had double-digit rebounds. Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) and Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) each tallied 14 points for the Maroons, who avenged a loss to the Royals earlier this season in Harrisonburg.

Tara Froese (Inman, KS/Inman) led all scorers in the game, knocking in 21 on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Froese went 3-of-5 from behind the three-point line, where EMU outscored the Maroons 27-3. Mullet chipped in 14 points and five assists for the Royals. Despite having a sizable advantage from three-point land, the Royals went just 4-of-11 from the free throw line and were outrebounded by the Maroons, 45-35.

Roanoke led from start to finish in the first half, building its lead to as many as 11 points. After the Maroons pushed their lead to 11 (26-15) with 7:47 left in the first half, Eastern Mennonite went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to just two. RC pushed the lead back to seven, but Mullet hit one of her four three-pointers with just 22 seconds left in the half, making the Roanoke lead 34-30 heading into the lockerrooms.

The Maroons take a road trip to Greensboro, NC on Thursday to play the Guilford College Quakers. The game will start at 7:00 pm in Greensboro.
