Team Effort Lifts RC to Win Over EMU
Williams Scores 15, Maroons Hold Mullet to 11
Roanoke vs. Eastern Mennonite Box Score
SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team defeated the Eastern Mennonite Royals on Friday evening, 65-42, in a match-up of Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams. The Maroons improve to 14-5 on the season and 12-3 in the conference standings, while the Royals fall to 3-18, 1-16. Heading into the contest, Eastern Mennonite’s Emily Mullet (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) was the nation’s leading scorer, averaging 25.9 points per game, but she was held to just 11 by Roanoke’s defense. The Royals started the second half much as they did the first, cutting the Maroon lead to as little as four points. Like they had in the first, the Maroons responded, going on an 18-2 run to blow the game open. After closing to within four with 16:18 to go, the Royals scored just two points over the next 11 minutes and found themselves trailing by 21, 52-31, with 5:36 left. Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) led all game scorers, tossing in 15 points. Freshman Emily Smith (Hampton, VA/Hampton) had her best collegiate outing, scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds for the Maroons. Roanoke, which was playing without its leading scorer Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) got points from 13 of the 14 players that saw action in the contest.
Led by senior Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) and Amber Kern (Roanoke, VA/Northside), the Maroon defense limited EMU’s Mullet to just 3-of-20 from the field, including 1-for-11 from three-point land, and forced her to commit seven turnovers. Mullet was coming off of a 58-point performance against Washington & Lee on Wednesday. The Royals were led in the scoring column by Christa Wittmer (Hartville, OH/Central Christian) who scored 12 and also added 10 rebounds, seven off the offensive glass. As a team, EMU shot just 25.0 percent (14-of-56) from the field in the contest.
The Maroons host Bridgewater College at 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon at the Bast Center in Salem. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Eagles came away with an 84-76 win over RC in mid-January.
