Maroons Fall at Guilford, 63-57

Roanoke Squanders Halftime Lead, Quesnberry Scores 14 to Lead RC

GREENSBORO, NC--The Roanoke College women's basketball team led by one point at the half, 26-25, but fell to the Guilford College Quakers on Wednesday evening, 63-57, in Greensboro, NC. The Maroons are now 13-6 on the season and have a 10-5 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers are now 12-4, 9-3.

The Maroons led early in the first half (2-0), but then fell behind for the remainder of the period before Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) hit a layup with 26 seconds left to give RC the 26-25 lead heading into the break.

Just under three minutes into the second half, the Quakers regained the advantage, and did not yield the lead for the rest of the game. Down by just two points with 11:32 to go, the Maroons failed to score over the next four minutes allowing Guilford to extend the lead to 11 points. A Gina Guthrie (New Castle, VA/Craig County) jumper with 41 ticks left cut the lead again to two points, but the Quakers hit four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

Quesenberry had a team-high 14 points for the Maroons, while Guthrie added 12. The Maroons lost depsite shooting 52 percent in the second half. Roanoke did, however, turn the ball over 23 times while being outrebounded 40-26.

Roanoke takes the next four days off before returning to action at home on Monday, February 7th, as it hosts Lynchburg College in a 7:00 pm contest.
