Maroons Fall to Guilford, 76-70

Webb Scores 16 in Losing Effort, RC Now 6-3, 4-1

SALEM, VA--The Guilford College Quakers handed the Roanoke College women’s basketball a 76-70 home loss on Thursday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Maroons fall to 6-3 on the season, 4-1 in league play, while Guilford improves to 7-3, 5-1. The win by Guilford was its first ever over the Maroons in Salem. The Maroons now hold a 19-4 edge in the series.

Guilford held the Maroons to just 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field in the game, including a 25.0 clip in the first half. The Maroons had the lead for the first five minutes of the contest, but a three-pointer by GC’s Nicole McCrory (Charlotte, NC/East Mecklenberg) with 14:29 remaining in the first half gave the Quakers a lead they would not give up the rest of the way. Guilford extended its first half lead to as much as 18, and went into the break sporting a 36-23 lead.

The Maroons were able to get within three points twice in the second half, but the Quakers withstood the charge both times. After letting the Maroons to within three, Guilford pushed the lead back up to 11 with 2:28 to go, but saw the lead trimmed to four after a Sarah Grimes (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) three-pointer with 37 seconds left. Guilford’s Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) kept the Maroons at bay in the final 3:35, hitting seven free throws. Beacham finished the night with 10 points and five assists.

Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) scored a team-high 16 points for the Quakers, who controlled the boards in the game, outrebounding the Maroons, 52-36. Both teams had 17 offensive boards, but Guilford denied second chances by Roanoke by grabbing 35 defensive rebounds. Last season’s conference Player of the Year, Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School) chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds for Guilford.

Roanoke’s offensive attack was led by senior Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) who scored 16 points. Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Maroons.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday in a 2:00pm contest with the Eagles of Bridgewater College. RC’s head coach Susan Dunagan seeks to inch closer to the 400 career victory mark. She is just three away.
