Webb Scores 25 in ODAC Semifinal Win
Maroons Will Play Emory & Henry on Saturday for ODAC Title

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team will be playing for its 13th Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship on Saturday afternoon after beating Guilford College, 78-60, on Friday in the semifinal round at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 20-6 on the season, which marks the 14th season in which head coach Susan Dunagan has led the squad to 20 or more wins. Junior Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Maroons to the victory on Friday afternoon. Her old mark was 21 which she set against Washington & Lee earlier this season. Webb was 8-for-11 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the win and also added four rebounds. Webb was the only Maroon in double-figures in the scoring column, but Roanoke saw 11 other players make a dent on the scoreboard. Senior Cheryl Rhodes (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) added eight points and four assists to the RC effort. Four players put in six points for the Maroons, who will play Emory & Henry College on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm for the ODAC title.
After trailing for the first 4:34 of the contest, the Maroons took the lead for good on a three-pointer by senior point guard Carrie McConnell (Radford, VA/Pulaski County). The three-point field goal was part of a 21-2 run by the Maroons which saw them go from six points down to 13 points up. By the time the end of the first half came, Roanoke held a 19-point lead, 43-24. The Maroons were on fire from the field in the first half, shooting 58.1 percent. On the other hand, the Quakers were forced into shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor.
After a layup by ODAC Player of the Year Arden Miller cut the Maroon lead to 17, RC used an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 25 points. Guilford cut the lead under 20 points, but was not able to get within 15 points the rest of the way.
In all, the Maroons shot 53.4 percent from the field in the contest and forced the Quakers to turn the ball over 17 times and shoot just 35.4 percent. Led by four assists each from Rhodes and McConnell, the Maroons handed out 21 assists on their 31 baskets.
Saturday’s meeting between the Maroons and Wasps of Emory & Henry will be their third in the ODAC championship contest. Roanoke holds a 2-0 edge in the prvious two games, winning the title in 1995 and 1984.
