SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team held off a pesky Hollins University squad on Friday evening, 84-75, to improve to 5-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Hollins falls to 2-4, 1-3 in league action. The game was the first since January 7th for the Maroons. Roanoke held a 12-point halftime lead and extended that cushion to as many as 17 in the early stages of the second half. Hollins would not go away, however, and slowly chipped away at the RC lead until it actually took a 73-72 lead with just 2:37 remaining in the game. The Maroons, however, outscored Hollins 12-2 the rest of the way to seal their 41st all-time win against their crosstown rival (against just one loss). During its run to get back in the game (when it took the lead), Hollins scored 16 of its 39 points from the free throw line. Overall, Hollins was 19-for-20 from the free throw line in the second half.
Roanoke led by just three late in the first half, but closed out the frame on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 12. Hollins scored the first three points of the contest, but the Maroons scored 17 of the next 21 points to grab a 17-7 lead just seven minutes in. RC held as much as a 15-point first half lead.
Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) scored 10 of RC’s first 19 points in the game, and finished with a total of 21. She also had four steals in the game, as did fellow senior Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County). Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season. Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) scored 11 for RC, while Sarah Grimes (Baltimore, MD/Lansdowne) and Amber Kern (Roanoke, VA/Northside) each added 10 to give the Maroons five double-digit scorers.
Hollins was led by Rosse Hopkins (Roanoke, VA/Northside) who led all scorers in the game with 25 points. She drained three three-pointers and also added five rebounds and two steals. Emily Ferrell (Roanoke, VA/Northside) added 21 for HU, and Mandy Nichols (Troutville, Lord Botetourt) 12 points and nine rebounds. Hollins shot just 39.3 percent from the field in the game, but made up for that by nailing 87.0 percent (20-of-23) from the free throw line.
Roanoke returns to action on Monday with a home contest against Thomas More (KY) College. The game at RC’s Bast Center is set to start at 6:00pm. Last season, the Maroons defeated the Saints, 85-77, in Salem.
