Barrett Scores 23 in RC Win
Maroons Beat Lynchburg for 38th Straight Time, 91-61

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team picked up its 38th consecutive victory over the Lynchburg College Hornets, this one a 91-61 win in Salem, VA on Monday evening. The Maroons are now 14-6 on the season and 11-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference after the victory, while the loss drops Lynchburg’s record to 6-13, 4-11. The Hornets led for the first three minutes of the contest, pushing their lead to as many as five points (10-5). The Maroons, however, went on a 9-0 run to capture the lead for good. In a 10 minute span during the first half, Roanoke went on a 26-8 run, extending its lead to double-figures. By the time the first half was over, Roanoke held a 44-26 lead. At the end of the first half, Roanoke had taken 41 shoots from the field, compared to just 19 for Lynchburg.
Turnovers were the key in the first half and in the game as well. Despite shooting 47.4 percent from the field in the first half, the Hornets committed 22 turnovers. Those 22 first half Lynchburg turnovers led to 24 Roanoke points. In all, the Hornets gave the ball away 41 times in the contest leading to 51 RC points. In addition to the strong defense, the Maroons hit the offensive boards. Roanoke had 17 offensive rebounds, and just 16 defensive boards.
Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) led all scorers in the game, dropping in a career-high 23 points in the winning Roanoke effort. She also had 14 rebounds, moving her over 200 for the season (she now has 209 rebounds this year). Barrett went 10-of-15 from the field, and also added two assists and two steals. Gina Guthrie (New Castle, VA/Craig County) and Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) each tallied 11 for the Maroons, while freshman Liz Sloop (Raleigh, NC/WG Enloe) put up a career-best 10 points. Sloop attempted and made her first college three-pointer in the game.
Lynchburg’s top scorer was Lehticia Deskins (Mt. Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson) who scored 14 points in the contest. Johari Bass (Roseland, VA/Nelson County) added 12 points for the Hornets, who went 14-of-16 from the free throw line. The game marked the return of Richie Waggoner to Roanoke. Waggoner, a Roanoke graduate, had spent the past nine seasons as a Roanoke assistant, but became the LC head coach this past summer.
The Maroons head to Bridgewater, VA on Wednesday to play the Eagles of Bridgewater College. The ball is scheduled to be tossed at 7:00 pm.
