Maroons Beat LC for 40th Straight Time
Maroons Prevail, 77-53, Barrett Gets 18 and Nine

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke women’s basketball team beat the Lynchburg College Hornets tonight, 77 -53, in a matchup of Old Dominion Athletic Conference foes. The Maroons improve to 8-4 on the season, 6-2 in the ODAC, while Hornets drop to 8-5, 4-5. The win is the 40th consecutive for the Maroons over the Hornets, dating back to the 1982-83 season. The win is also the 399th in the career of RC head coach Susan Dunagan. After a tight first half, the Maroons went into the intermission with a slim 32-25 lead. The game opened up in the first 10 minutes of the second half when the Maroons went on a 22-6 run. The Maroons got seven of those points from junior Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) and six from junior center Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside), who finished with a game-high 18 points. The Hornets shot just 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from the field in the second half and committed 17 turnovers in the stanza.
The game was close in the first half, with both teams trading leads over the first 11-plus minutes. The Maroons took the lead for good on a Liz Sloop (Raleigh, NC/WG Enloe) layup with 9:04 left in the frame. The Maroons opened up as much as a nine-point lead in the first half before taking the seven-point cushion into the break.
In addition to Barrett’s 18 points, the Maroons also got 10 from Sloop, who tied a career-high in the column. Sloop also added four blocks and five rebounds to the Maroon effort. A total of five Maroons had double-digits in the scoring column, including Quesenberry who had 11. On the defensive end of the floor, three Maroons tallied four steals. Quesenberry, Kristina McMillian (Roanoke, VA/Northside) and Amber Kern (Roanoke, VA/Northside) all had four thefts.
Joharri Bass (Roseland, VA/Nelson County) had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets, with Erika Smith (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) adding 11 markers. Lynchburg had 32 turnovers in the contest. The Hornets had seven steals in the game, with all seven coming from seven different players.
The Maroons host Washington & Lee at 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon in the Bast Center. Should the Maroons win, Dunagan will become just the eighth active Division III coach to reach the 400 career win mark.
