Maroons Win Home Finale, 60-52

Williams Gets 18 as Roanoke Beats RMC

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team closed out the home portion of its 2000-2001 schedule with a 60-52 win over Randolph-Macon on Thursday night in Salem. The Maroons, who have now won four straight games over the Yellow Jackets, improve to 16-6 on the season and 14-4 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. Randolph-Macon falls to 12-11 on the year, 10-9 in league action.

A sloppy game saw both teams combine to commit 63 turnovers and shoot just 39.6 percent from the field. Both teams made 22 field goals each, but Roanoke held a 12-5 lead at the free throw line and made one more three-pointer than the Yellow Jackets.

Roanoke took a 37-24 lead into the intermission and extended that 13-point lead to as much as 23 points early in the second half. The Maroons opened up the frame on a 10-0 run to grab a 47-24 lead with 18:18 to go in the game. The Yellow Jackets methodically chipped away at the lead, thanks in large part to strong defense and came within seven points (53-46) with 4:45 to go. Randolph-Macon used a 21-6 run to cut that lead down. During the run, the RMC defense held Roanoke scoreless for a span of nine minutes. Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick Country) scored a bucket at the 17:02 mark and Roanoke’s next basket did not come until there was just 8:21 remaining. The Yellow Jackets could not, however, get closer than that seven point spread.

The game was tight for the first 10-plus minutes. The score was tied six times in that span and neither team took more than a four-point lead. The Maroons kept RMC off the board for a five-minute stretch and in that time grabbed a 30-16 lead with 4:39 to go in the first half. The Maroons had a 16-point lead late in the half, but that was cut to 13 by Allison King (Cary, NC/Cary) who drained a three with 47 seconds to go.

For the sixth consecutive game, Roanoke sophomore guard Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) led all Maroons in the scoring column. She scored 18 in the win, going 7-of-10 from the field and hitting three three-pointers. She also had three assists and four steals. Senior Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) tallied 14 points in her final home game, getting eight of those from the free throw line. A tale of two halves saw RC shoot 51.7 percent in the first and 27.6 in the second.

King was RMC’s leading scorer in the contest, throwing down 12 points, including six from behind the three-point line. Meredith Roberts (Vienna, VA/James Madison) had 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also led the Yellow Jacket defensive charge, posting five steals.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday as they travel to Lynchburg College for a 2:00pm tip-off against the Hornets. On Sunday, Roanoke heads to Washington & Lee University for another 2:00pm start.
