14 Maroons Find Scoring Column, Webb Leads Way with 17

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back in an 89-40 rout over the Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 11-4 on the season and 9-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. RMWC falls to 1-11, 1-9. By the time the Wildcats were able to put points on the board, 4:24 had elapsed in the game and the Maroons had already scored 12 points. In all, RMWC was able to score just 16 points in the opening half, while committing 19 turnovers. By the time the clock hit zero, the Maroons were leading by a score of 36-16.
The game was much the same in the second half, Roanoke outscoring the Wildcats, 53-24. After RMWC hit the second half’s first shot, the Maroons went on a 11-0 run to extend the lead to 29 points. A 15-0 run late in thee half pushed RC’s lead to 48 points, before ending up with the 49-point win. This was Roanoke’s largest margin of victory since a 90-38 win over the Wildcats in the 1993-94 season.
Roanoke shot 58.3 percent in the second half and 51.4 percent from the game. The Maroons were also careful with the ball, committing a season-low nine turnovers.
Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) led all RC scorers with 17 points in the game, while Cheryl Rhodes (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) added 15. All 14 Maroons that saw action the contest scored at least one points, including Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) who chipped in 10 markers. Freshman Meredith Evans (Floyd, VA/Floyd County) had a career-high nine points for the Maroons. Senior Carrie McConnell (Radford, VA/Pulaski County) had eight assists, while Webb and Barrett each had nine rebounds.
RMWC’s Tara Carleton (Dawsonville, GA/Dawson County), the 1999 ODAC Player of the Year, led all scorers with 29 points in the game, going 10-of-20 from the field and also grabbing seven rebounds.
Roanoke will travel to Emory, VA on Thursday of next week to play the Emory & Henry Wasps, who heading into Saturday’s action, was number-two in the ODAC standings. The game between Susan Dunagan’s squad and the Wasps will start at 7:00 pm.
