Maroons Trounce RMWC, 82-32

Three Score in Double-Figures, RC Now 10-4, 8-2

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke women’s basketball team defeated Randolph-Macon Woman’s College on Tuesday night in Salem in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest by the final of 82-32. Tonight’s moves Roanoke’s record to 10-4, 8-2 and drops RMWC down to 2-13, 0-12 in the ODAC. The Maroons have been successful in the last five meetings with RMWC. Roanoke’s last loss to the Wildcats was in the 1997-98 season. The last time the Maroons held their opponent to so few points came in the 1991-92 season with a 77-15 win over the same Wildcat squad.

Roanoke jumped to a quick lead of 15-3 with in the first five minutes of the game. Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) and Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) started the game with six and five consecutive points, respectively, while Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) added four points in the run. Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) and Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) also helped widen the scoring gab with four points each in the first half. RMWC’s Meg Hancock (Richmond, VA/Madison Central) scored nine points and four rebounds in the first half, and ended the game with a team high 13 points. RMWC’s downside was its turnovers, totaling 12 at the break and 31 in the game.

The Roanoke women were up by 22 points (42-20) at the half and kept their opponent to one basket in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Barrett had her second consecutive solid outing, scoring 15 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and adding four steals. Webb chipped in 13 points and Weber racked up 11 for the Maroons. Amber Kern (Roanoke, VA/Northside) had a game high five assists for Roanoke, adding to the team total of 17. Late in the game, RC’s Ashley Fleming (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Bishop England) scored eight consecutive points for the Maroons, including a three-pointer.

The Maroons held a 26-5 edge in the free throw column and also finished the game with 18 steals, including three each from Williams, Quesenberry, and Kern.

RMWC ended with a strong effort, scoring four points in the final two minutes, after only scoring eight points in the first 15 minutes of the second half.

The Maroons next play at home against Emory & Henry at 7:00pm on Thursday. The last time the two teams met was in the ODAC championship last year when Roanoke won by 11 points, 59-48.
