Maroons Win Home Debut
Barrett Scores 23 in 73-54 Win Over VWC

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s basketball team won in its 2000-2001 home debut on Saturday evening, 73-54, over the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College. Roanoke improves to 2-2 on the year and 1-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action, while the Marlins return home with a 1-4 overall mark, 0-2 in league play. Roanoke’s Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and also tied a game-high with 12 rebounds. Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) scored 15 for the Maroons, while sophomore guard Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) chipped in 13 points and a team-high four assists.
Virginia Wesleyan’s Angelique Cavanaugh (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville) scored 15 points to pace the Marlins, while freshman Tomorrow Loften (Richmond, VA/JR Tucker) had 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Marlins led for all but 62 seconds of the first half until a Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) free throw with 3:08 left in the opening frame gave the Maroons a 29-28 lead. Roanoke would not give up the lead again the rest of the contest. The Maroons went into the break up by nine (42-33) and pushed the lead to as much as 18 midway through the second. The Marlins went on a 7-0 run later in the second half to cut the lead down to 11 points, but the Maroons withstood the charge and eventually pushed the lead to the winning 19-point margin.
The Marlins were hurt by poor shooting the entire game. The team shot just 29.6 percent for the contest, including a 24.3 percent (9-for-37) clip in the second half. In the past two games in Salem, the Marlins have gone just 41-of-153 (26.7%) from the field after going 20-for-82 in last season’s meeting with RC at the Bast Center.
The Maroons head back to game action this coming Tuesday as they travel to Lynchburg, VA to play the Wildcats of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. The game in Lynchburg begins at 7:00pm.
