Roanoke vs. Virginia Wesleyan Box Score
SALEM, VA--Sophomore Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored 16 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds to lead the Roanoke College women’s basketball team to an 81-58 win over visiting Virginia Wesleyan on Friday night in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Marlins drop to 1-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference play. Despite turning the ball over 30 times the Maroons picked up their fourth consecutive win over the Marlins thanks in part to solid defense. The Roanoke defense held VWC to just 24.4 percent shooting in the game, including 14.6 percent (7-for-48) in the first half and 17.6 percent (6-for-34) from the three-point line.
Every player suited up for the Maroons in the game had an impact on the scoring column, including Barrett who had a game-high 16 points. She went 8-for-11 from the field, while also hauling in 15 rebounds, seven coming on the offensive glass. Holly Weber (Stuart, VA/Patrick County) added 10 points to the RC effort, while Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) and Sarah Dingledine (Standardsville, VA/William Monroe) each chipped in nine markers.
The Maroons scored the first eight points of the game, all in the first five minutes of the contest, and would only let the Marlins closer than that eight point margin just once the rest of the way (at the 5:19 mark of the first half VWC cut the lead to seven). Two Kristina McMillian (Roanoke, VA/Northside) free throws with 17 seconds left in the first half gave Roanoke a 15-point lead heading into the intermission.
With six minutes gone in the second stanza, the Marlins got within nine points (47-38), but they could get no closer. The Maroons led by 10 points, 59-49, with 7:47 left in the game, but outscored VWC 22-10 in the remaining minutes of the game.
Erin Duckett led the way for Virginia Wesleyan, scoring 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Megan DiCave added 12 points to the VWC stats, and three steals as well.
The Maroons return to action on Sunday as they host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in a 2:00 pm contest at the C. Homer Bast Center.
