Dunagan Gets Number-400

Maroons Beat W&L, 63-45, Barrett Scores 22

SALEM, VA--Roanoke College head women’s basketball coach Susan Dunagan picked up her 400th career victory with a 63-45 win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Washington & Lee on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 9-4 on the season, 7-2 in league play, while the Generals fall to 5-9, 4-7. Dunagan, who is in her 20th season on the RC sidelines, is now 400-125 (.762) in her tenure and 14-0 all-time against the Generals.

The Maroons put Saturday’s game out of reach in the first 10 minutes, jumping out to a 26-4 lead with 10:43 to go in the first half. Roanoke led by as many as 24 points in the first half, 33-9, before taking a 39-19 lead into the locker rooms. Roanoke’s pressure defense was the key to the first half. The Maroons forced 19 W&L turnovers in the opening frame and allowed the Generals to shoot just 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from the field. Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside) scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the first half.

Washington & Lee made the game interesting in the early stages of the second half, using a 14-4 run to cut the lead to just nine with 15:21 left in the contest. However, that would be as close as W&L would get. Barrett hit a layup with 14:05 to go to push the lead to double-digits, where it stayed the remainder of the time.

For the game, the Maroons had 20 steals on 35 Washington & Lee turnovers. Sophomore Katrina Williams (Salem, VA/Glenvar) led the Maroon defense with a career-high five steals, while Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) had four.

In addition to Barrett’s 22 points, the only other Maroon in double-figures in the scoring column was Quesenberry, who tallied 10. Williams and Amber Kern (Roanoke, VA/Northside) each had nine points for the Maroons. Williams also had a game-best five assists.

Washington & Lee, which shot 68.8 percent (11-of-18) in the second half, was led by Jessica Mentz’s (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) 22 points and nine boards. She also had two blocks in the contest.

In her 19-plus seasons as Roanoke’s head coach, Dunagan has led the Maroons to 13 conference titles, 10 NCAA tournament appearances, and 14 20-win seasons. Since the ODAC was formed prior to the 1982-83 season, Dunagan has gone 272-42 in league play, has three perfect conference seasons, and has played in 16 of the 18 conference championship games. Six times she has been named the conference Coach of the Year and was also the 1997 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year. She is just the seventh active Division III coach in the country to reach the 400-win plateau.

Roanoke returns to action on Tuesday as it hosts Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in a 7:00pm tip-off.
