Maroons Advance to ODAC Semifinals

Webb Scores 14 in Win Over Washington & Lee on Thursday

SALEM, VA--Suzanne Webb (Narrows, VA/Narrows) scored 14 points to lead the Roanoke College women’s basketball team to a 72-58 win over Washington & Lee on Thursday evening in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. The Maroons, who are now 19-6 on the season, will play Guilford College on Friday at 3:00 pm at the Salem Civic Center in the league semifinals.

The Maroons used a solid first half to put the game out of W&L’s reach. After a half in which they held the Generals to just 29.2 percent from the field the Maroons jumped out to a 40-21 halftime lead. The Generals committed 18 turnovers in the opening half of play and 26 on the game. Roanoke on the other hand gave the ball away just 14 times and stole the ball 15 times, led by a game-high from senior Cheryl Rhodes (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring).

In addition to Webb’s 14 points, the Maroons also got 13 points and 15 rebounds from sophomore center Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside). This was her 10th game of the season in which Barrett has posted a double-double. Gina Guthrie (New Castle, VA/Craig County) had eight points and also stole the ball three times. Senior point guard Carrie McConnell (Radford, VA/Pulaski County) added eight points and six assists to the RC effort.

Roanoke led from start to finish in the game, pushing its lead to as many as 23 points. After W&L was unable to score for the first three minutes of the game, the squad trailed by 17 points, 27-10, with 6:22 left in the first half. The Maroons extended its first half lead to as many as 21, but went into the break with the 19 points advantage.

The Roanoke lead hovered between 17 and 21 points for most of the second half, but the Generals went on a 10-1 run half way through the stanza to trim the lead to 14. W&L was able to get within 12, but the Maroons scored their final eight points of the game from the free throw line to keep the lead above 12.

The Maroons will now square off with Guilford College at 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon in the Salem Civic Center. The Quakers were 77-71 winners over Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday. In the other quarterfinal games on Thursday, Bridgewater defeated Eastern Mennonite and Emory & Henry downed Randolph-Macon.
