Wernert And Hilgartner Named All-Americans
Both Named to the Second Team
SALEM, Va.--Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Maura Hilgartner (Baltimore, MD/Mercy), members of the Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team, have been named Second Team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Americans. Both senior co-captains on this year’s team, Wernert and Hilgartner, both of whom were First Team All-Conference players, helped Roanoke to a 14-3 record and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in 1999. The two selections to the Second Team are the most Roanoke has received since the 1997 season when two were also placed on the second squad. Wernert, the 1999 ODAC Player of the Year, led the team in scoring this season, racking up 75 points on 48 goals and 27 assists. Named to the IWLCA All-American team for the first time in her career, Wernert is scheduled to play in the Division III North/South Senior All-Star game in June. The game is being held in conjunction with the STX Lacrosse Festival at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on June 12th.
Hilgartner led a Maroon defensive unit that allowed just 120 goals this season, the lowest amount given up by an RC team since the 1995 season. While drawing the opponents’ top offensive threat, Hilgartner led the Maroons in caused turnovers (47) and was second on the club with 51 groundballs. Like Wernert, Hilgartner is making her debut on the All-American team.
