Five Maroons Named to All-Region Team
Three Named First Team Regional All-Americans
SALEM, Va.--Five Roanoke College women’s lacrosse players have been named to the 1999 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) South Atlantic Region All-American squad. Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), Ellie Page (Savannah, GA/Berkshire), and Maura Hilgartner (Baltimore, MD/Mercy) were all named to the regional First Team, while Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Erin Brooks (Baltimore, MD/Maryvale) both were selected to the Second Team. These five student-athletes helped Roanoke go 14-3 this season and win the 1999 Old Dominion Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse championship. Roanoke’s five selections to the South Atlantic regional are its most since earning five in 1996. Lindsay Wernert was the named the 1999 ODAC’s Player of the Year and the 1998-99 Roanoke College Female Athlete of the Year after leading the Maroons in all offensive categories, including goals (48), assists (27), and points (75). She is now a two-time member of the regional team after being named to the Second Team last season.
The remaining four players from Roanoke to be named to the team are all making their debuts on the squad.
Page was the third leading scorer for the Maroons this season, recorded 44 points on 38 goals and six assists. She was instrumental in helping the Maroons claim two victories in the ODAC tournament, scoring eight goals, including five in the championship game win over Randolph-Macon. Page was a First Team All-ODAC selection in 1999.
Rounding out Roanoke’s First Team selections in 1999 is Hilgartner, who was the top defender on the Maroon squad this year. Also a First Team All-ODAC selection, she led the team in caused turnovers (47) and was second on the club with 51 groundballs. Hilgartner, a senior, was a co-captain along with Lindsay Wernert in 1999.
Kylie Wernert was a multi-talented star for the Maroons in 1999. She split her time between the defensive and attack units, playing equally as well on both ends of the field. Despite seeing half of her time on the defensive end of the field, she still managed to recorded the second most points for Roanoke in 1999, scoring 50 on the year (44g, 6a). She teamed with sister Lindsay to form the first ever sister-duo to be named to the First Team All-ODAC squad.
Joining Kylie Wernert on the Second Team is defender Erin Brooks. Brooks was a stellar defender for Roanoke this year, joining with Hilgartner on a defensive unit that held its opponents to the lowest goal total (120) since the 1995 campaign. Brooks caused 33 turnovers and scooped 48 groundballs, helping her grab Second Team All-ODAC accolades.
With their selections to the South Atlantic Regional All-American squad Lindsay Wernert, Ellie Page, and Maura Hilgartner will all advance to the national ballot, and will be up for national All-American honors. Since 1987, Roanoke has had 36 women’s lacrosse team named to the National All-American squad, including 26 in the 1990s and seven over the past three years.
