Maroons Score First 12 In 13-1 Win Over BC
Roanoke Extends Winning Streak to Six
ASHLAND, Va.--The Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team scored the first 12 goals of its game on Tuesday afternoon en route to a 13-1 victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles. The Maroons, ranked seventh in the country in this week’s national polls, improve to 8-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Roanoke has now won six consecutive games. The Eagles fall to an even 5-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) led the charge for Roanoke on the day, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists. In addition, the Maroons got two goals and an assist from Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson). Debbie Apazidis (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) came within two minutes of recording the Maroons’ first shutout since 1994. She made 10 saves in net for Roanoke.
Erin Harding (Cockeysville, MD/Notre Dame Prep) got Roanoke’s first goal of the day, at the 24:22 mark. The Maroons then added nine goals over the next 18 minutes to extend the lead to 10-0, before Laurin Troup (Parkton, MD/Hereford) scored with just 1:41 left in the opening half to make the score 11-0. The goal was Troup’s first of the season. During the Maroons’ 11-0 first half run, Wernert, Ellie Page (Savannah, GA/Berkshire), and Stephanie Newell (Hudson, OH/Hudson) all beat the Bridgewater goaltender twice. Amy Kelaher (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) found the back of the net once and added an assist in the opening half.
Hunt added her second goal of the game nine minutes into the second half. The game then was scoreless for the next minutes 19. With just 2:07 left in the contest, Bridgewater’s Emily Taylor (Spotsylvania, VA/Fredericksburg Christian) beat Apazidis, denying Roanoke the shutout. Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored with under a minute left, her second of the contest, to make the score 13-1, where it would finish.
This is the sixth time in seven years, and third consecutive season, that the Maroons have held an opponent to one goal or less. For just the fourth time in program history, the Maroons held an opponent to just one goal (all four have come in the past five seasons).
Roanoke returns to action on Thursday as it hosts Sweet Briar College in an ODAC game before heading to Glassboro, NJ on Saturday to play the Rowan University Profs. Rowan is currently ranked 12th in the country.
