Maroons Score 11-8 Win Over Colorado Coll.

Roanoke Nets Seven Second Half Goals

SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team scored seven second half goals and overcame a 5-4 halftime deficit to defeat the Colorado College Tigers, 11-8, in Salem on Friday. The Maroons improve to 2-1 on the year, while they send Colorado home with a 1-3 mark.

Colorado took a 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest, but the Maroons scored four of the next five goals to take a 4-3 lead. With 12:58 left on the clock, Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) took the ball behind the cage and found a cutting Ellie Page (Savannah, GA/Berkshire School) who then beat the CC goaltender. Off of the resulting face-off, Wernert took control of the ball, cruised down the field and scored a goal, just 14 seconds after the Page tally, a goal that tied the game at three. After another RC goal, the Tigers closed out the half with two consecutive tallies to take a 5-4 intermission lead.

The Roanoke defense proved to be the difference in the second half. After Colorado scored the first goal of the second half, the Maroons held the Tigers without a goal for a 23-minute span. In that time, Roanoke scored five consecutive goals to take a 9-6 lead. Lindsay Wernert and sister Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) each sandwiched two goals around a Page tally during the Roanoke run. After Colorado broke its scoring lapse, Kylie Wernert added her third tally of the game. Freshman Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) closed out the Roanoke scoring in the game.

Lindsay Wernert finished the day with three goals and three assists, and now has a team-best nine goals and five assists for 14 points, while her sister Kylie scored three times for Roanoke on Friday. Ellie Page also scored three times for the Maroons, who also got a goal from Amy Kelaher (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) in the first half.
