Roanoke Trounces Guilford, 16-3, to Win Third Straight
Kylie Wernert Scores Eight Goals For the Maroons
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team got eight goals from Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) to trounce the Guilford College Quakers on Tuesday afternoon, 16-3. The Maroons improve to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Roanoke, the 10th ranked team in the country, has never lost to Guilford, winning all 11 meetings. For the second consecutive game, the Maroons fell behind 2-0, but quickly took control of the game after falling into the hole. After Guilford took the 2-0 lead, the Maroons went on an 8-0 run to close out the first half. Kylie Wernert scored four of those goals, while Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) scored two apiece. Stephanie Newell (Hudson, OH/Hudson) had an assist on Roanoke’s first goal, while Lindsay Wernert added a helper later in the period.
Guilford scored the first goal of the second half (at the 26:03 mark), but again succumbed to the Roanoke defense and did not score another goal for the rest of the game. Kylie Wernert got the ball rolling for Roanoke in the second half, scoring four consecutive goals in the span of six minutes to give her eight for the game. Lindsay Wernert and Hunt closed out the scoring in the second frame, Wernert scoring three, while Hunt added her third of the contest.
Kylie Wernert finished the game with eight goals on 20 shots, while Lindsay Wernert had five goals on just nine shots. Hunt had three goals and an assists, while Newell added the helper. Debbie Apazidis (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made eight saves in the net for Roanoke.
The Maroons return to action on Thursday as they travel to Lynchburg College for a 4:00 pm game.
