Goucher Beats Maroons, 17-7

Hunt Scores Four Times, Werenrt has Two and Two

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team fell to 3-4 on the season after suffering a 17-7 loss to the Goucher College Gophers on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The loss was Roanoke’s first to the Gophers since the 1996 NCAA tournament. Roanoke had won three straight against the Baltimore, MD team since that time. Goucher improves to 6-2 on the year.

With the score tied at two with just over 20 minutes left in the first half, the Gophers used a 3-0 spurt to put some room between themselves and the Maroons and take control of the contest. The Maroons scored for the third and final time of the first half with 17:08 to go, but saw Goucher close out the half on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 12-3 lead at the break. Lauren Manekin and Liz Martin combined to score seven of Goucher’s first half goals and totaled nine in the game.

After allowing the Roanoke score with a bit over 17 minutes left in the first, the Goucher defense did not crack again until their were just about 15 minutes to go in the contest, giving up a goal to Maroon junior Leslie Hunt, who had four goals in the game. After scoring the final seven of the first half, the Gophers put in four straight goals to open the second half, and in the stanza led by as many as 13 (16-3). The Maroons put together a three-goal stretch late in the game to cut into the gap.

Goucher’s Manekin tallied five goals in the contest, while Martin finished with four goals and an assist. Rachel Levien scored three times in the winning effort, while two GC goalies, starter Rebekah Oates and Megan Zeller, stopped a combined 12 Roanoke shots.

In addition to Hunt’s four scores, Roanoke got two goals and two assists from senior Kylie Wernert. Freshman Jennifer Winfield opened the scoring for the Maroons in the contest.

The Maroons head to Greensboro, NC on Tuesday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest against the Quakers of Guilford College. That game begins at 4:00pm.
