Roanoke Defeats Goucher College, 18-12

Maroons Extend Winning Streak to Five

SALEM, Va.--Behind a season-high eight goals from senior Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), the Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team defeated the Goucher College Gophers on Saturday afternoon, 18-12. The win moves Roanoke’s record to 7-2 this season, and extends its winning streak to five game. The Gophers fall to 4-5 on the year.

Roanoke got off to a fast start in the game, scoring the first five goals of the contest. Ellie Page (Savannah, GA/Berkshire) netted the first two for Roanoke. Wernert made the score 3-0 with her first of the contest, while Amy Kelaher (Setuaket, NY/Ward Melville) capped the Roanoke run with two consecutive goals. The two tallies were her second and third points of the game after she assisted on Page’s first. Goucher outscored the Maroons, 4-3, in the remaining minutes of the first half to make the score 8-4 in favor of Roanoke at the break.

Goucher made things interesting in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Gophers went on a 3-0 run to open the half to cut the RC lead to just 8-7. Muffie Bliss (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) scored for the third time in the game for Goucher during the run. The three goals were a part of a 4-0 overall run for Goucher, dating back to the first half. Roanoke’s Page netted her fourth of the game with 20 minutes left, but Goucher again answered, Lauren Manekin’s (Lutherville, MD/Park School) third of the game, to again make it a one-goal game, 9-8. From there, the Lindsay Wernert show began. Wernert scored seven of the final nine goals Roanoke would score, including the final five. Starting at the 15:30 mark of the second half, Wernert and her Maroon teammates, over the next four minutes, turned a one-goal game into a four-goal game. With 8:20 left one the clock, Goucher drew to within three goals, but Wernert scored three goals in a matter of 1:43 to secure the victory for Roanoke.

In addition to her eight goals, Wernert added an assist in the game. Page finished with five goals for Roanoke, while freshman Leslie Hunt (Towson, MD/Towson) had a goal and four assists.

Roanoke’s current five-game winning streak is its longest since a seven-gamer during the 1997 season. Roanoke has now won the past two meetings with Goucher after a 14-5 victory last season. Today’s game was the second in the past three that a Maroon has scored eight times. Lindsay’s sister Kylie scored eight in a 16-3 victory over Guilford earlier in the week.

Roanoke returns to action on Tuesday as the Bridgewater Eagles make a visit to Alumni Field for a 4:00 pm Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest.
