Maroons Win 18th Straight Over Hollins, 16-7
Kelaher and Page Each Score Four Goals
SALEM, Va.--The Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team defeated Hollins University on a rainy Thursday afternoon, 16-7, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. Roanoke improves its record to 11-3 on the season, 7-0 in conference play, and extends its winning streak over Hollins to 18 games, dating back to the 1982 season. With the win the Maroons secure the number-one seed in the upcoming conference tournament (April 21, 24-25) and as a result will host the ‘final four’ next Saturday and Sunday. Amy Kelaher (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) led the charge for Roanoke on the day, scoring four goals and handing out two assists. The four goals are a new career-high for the sophomore. Ellie Page (Savannah, GA/Berkshire) also scored four times for the Maroons, who have now outscored Hollins, 275-63, during the current 18-game winning streak. Page also added an assist, while senior Lindsay Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) handed out four helpers on the day, to go along with two scores.
Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored three times and added two assists for RC, while Katie O’Keefe (Madison, NJ/Oak Knoll) had a goal and two assists and Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) had two scores.
The Maroons scored the first five goals of the game and led at the break, 10-3. The team then scored seven of the first eight goals in the second stanza, opening a 16-4 lead. Hollins scored the final three goals of the game to close to within 16-7. The seven goals by Hollins was the most it has scored against Roanoke since the 1989 season in a 12-9 loss.
The Maroons close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday as the Marlin of Virginia Wesleyan College make a visit to Alumni Field for a 12:00 noon start. A win would give Roanoke 12 regular season victories. The team has not won that many during a regular season since the 1992 campaign when it racked up 13.
