Hunt Leads RC to 15-7 Win
Maroons Outscore Sweet Briar 9-1 in Second Half
SWEET BRIAR, VA--The Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team used a 9-1 spurt in the second half to come away with a 15-7 road win over conference rival Sweet Briar College on Thursday afternoon. The Maroons, who saw the score tied at six at the break of Thursday’s game, improve to 5-5 on the season, 2-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Sweet Briar jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, before the game was even three minutes old. The Maroons fought their way back in, evening the score at four with 17:12 remaining in the first half. The two teams traded goals in the remaining time in the half, and went into the break knotted at six.
The game remained close until the Maroons scored three goals in the span of 18 seconds late in the second half. Sue Digby (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) got that run started, netting her only tally of the game with 6:38 left. Off the ensuing draw, Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) found the back of the net, officially 10 seconds after Digby’s goal. It would take the Maroons just eight more seconds to make the score 11-7. Erin Harding (Hunt Valley, MD/Notre Dame Prep) took control of the ball off the draw after Hunt’s goal, raced down the field and beat the Sweet Briar keeper high-side. The Maroons had not led in the game until Hunt scored with 14:13 left in the contest.
The Roanoke defense again stepped up its play in the second half, allowing just one SBC tally, that coming with 28:04 left in the game. Sarah Tengwall (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s) and Emily Metro (Crofton, MD/Arundel) each caused a team-high three turnovers for the Maroons in the game.
On the offensive end, Hunt’s five scores were a game-high. Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored four goals and handed out an assist, while Harding scored three times and added two helpers.
The Maroons host Rowan University at 1:00 pm on Saturday. The game will be on RC’s Alumni Field. The Profs enter the game as the 10th ranked team in the country.
