Maroons Move to 3-0 With 21-2 Win
Roanoke Gets Fivee From Wernert in Win Over Sweet Briar
SALEM, VA--After being named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday, senior Kylie Wernert (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) scored five goals to lead the Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team to a 21-2 win over conference rival Sweet Briar College on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in league action, while Sweet Briar falls to 0-2, 0-2. By the time Sweet Briar was able to score for the first time in the contest, the Maroons already had a 20-0 lead. The Maroons jumped all over SBC in the first half, taking a 15-0 lead into the intermission. Wernert scored three of Roanoke’s first four goals of the game, including the game-winner with 24:31 to go in the first half. She would then add Roanoke’s 11th and 12th goals.
With the 15-0 halftime lead, the Maroons moved its defenders up front to start off the second half, and as a result junior Sarah Tengwall (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s) scored her first career goal. Sophomore defender Katy Shaver (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) also scored for RC. Tengwall finished the game with a score and an assist, while Shaver had two goals. In all, the Maroons got goals from 11 different players.
Leslie Hunt (Baltimore, MD/Towson) kept her hands on the RC scoring lead for the season, finishing the game with three goals and two assists. She increases her season output to 19 points. Wernert is just behind with 18. Hunt also had a game-best five caused turnovers. Freshman Jennifer Winfield (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep) recorded her first career multiple goal game, finishing with two, as did fellow first-year player Sarah Cook (Baldwin, MD/Dulaney).
The Maroons head to Lynchburg College on Friday for a 4:00pm showdown with the Hornets. Lynchburg was the ODAC’s preseason number-one pick in the coaches poll, but comes into the game off of an 8-7 loss to Randolph-Macon on Tuesday afternoon.
